CROSS-PARTY CONCERNS IN THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT ON WIND ENERGY
KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, AND COLLABORATION
CONCERNS IN THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT ARE GROWING
A growing number of European Parliament members, from different political groups, are taking an interest and are raising concerns related to wind energy, its impact, and its cost.
“Offshore Wind Farms: Towards a New Environmental Failure?” co-organized by MEP Bellamy of the EPP group and MEP Miranda from the EFA group. It focused on many of the environmental impacts related to offshore wind developments. Scientists are already aware of the impact of land-based wind farms, which create their local climates while harming birds and other wildlife. Offshore wind farms present an entirely new challenge, and many experts feel it’s essential that we evaluate the potential impacts on marine life before committing to a rapid expansion in offshore wind infrastructure.
“Wind Industry - At What Cost?,” organized by MEPs Nissinen, Roos, and Zalewska from the ECR group. This presentation delved further into the broader costs associated with wind energy, encompassing economic, environmental, and social factors. Various EU countries, Norway, Turkey, and the UK have already seen the huge financial costs associated with wind energy infrastructure. Construction of the 4GW onshore Markbygden 1101 project in Sweden is projected to cost roughly € 5 billion, while the 3.6 GW offshore Dogger Bank project in the UK carries a price tag of at least € 12.6 billion. These are colossal investments to make with public funding in technology with such limited public understanding and involvement.
This cross-party involvement makes one thing abundantly clear: the challenges and concerns associated with wind energy are issues that rise above political divisions. Therefore, we need a unified, bipartisan approach that places all data and research on the table.
